Warm up with fun and silly solo dance moves to classic Swing dance music followed by a beginner Lindy Hop lesson with Gabrielle Kauffman and David Tom from Swing Toronto. The Lindy Hop has been a popular social dance since the 1930s - come find out why it is experiencing a revival today!
Gabrielle Kauffman started dancing in 2010 and teaching in 2017 and has been a great supporter and promoter of Lindy Hop, Balboa, Slow Swing and Collegiate Shag. Gabrielle is a strong believer in the many benefits of dance and draws on her skills and philosophy as a long time math and science educator when she facilitates her classes.
David Tom discovered Swing dancing during the Swing revival period in Toronto in the late 1980s. Starting with Lindy Hop, he soon embraced other Vernacular Jazz styles like Balboa and Blues. After a brief hiatus to pursue a career in IT, David returned to Toronto in 2004 and reconnected with his passion for dance. Over the past 25 years, he has performed at events such as the Much Music Video Awards and the TD Jazz Festival. David believes in choosing dance styles that match the music you love, seeing dance as a form of authentic self-expression. His favorite quote, "Life isn't about waiting for the storm to pass; it's about learning to dance in the rain," reflects his approach to both life and dance.
This workshop is free for everyone to attend thanks to the support of Arts in the Parks program, funded by Toronto Arts Foundation in partnership with Toronto Arts Council and the City of Toronto.
