A workshop for artists and teachers focusing on approaches and strategies for accessible movement teaching. The workshop includes an introduction to disability, language specific to teaching dance to a variety of movers, tips on how to plan inclusive classes for both in studio and community arts settings, anticipating access needs, and thinking through adaptations and translation/transposition in movement. Participants will have an opportunity to share movement activities within their dance style and genre of choice. This workshop explicitly welcomes teachers working in both community arts and studio environments.
Shay Erlich is a hard of hearing, multiply disabled, storyteller, community-engaged artist and wheelchair dancer based in Tkaronto. Shay co-founded The Cyborg Circus Project which served disabled youth in the through arts and leadership programming. Shay teaches and performs based in contemporary and contact improv dance forms among other performance practices. Shay’s performing credits include local and national performances with The Cyborg Circus Project, Political Movement Theatre Company, In Situ 2018, NextFest 2019 and the Contact Dance International Film Festival.
